Silkworms can make excellent subjects for class projects at school. Not only are they fascinating creatures with a unique lifecycle, but they also provide hands-on learning experiences that captivate students' interest. Here are some instructions on how to set up a school project involving silkworms.
Silkworms in the classroom
Project ideas
1. Setting Up the Project: - Food Supply: Ensure you have a consistent food supply. This means plenty of fresh mulberry leaves that must be replaced daily. Alternatively, you can use silkworm chow, feeding them a small block of the chow daily. - Housing: House the silkworms appropriately. For individual projects, use milk cartons cut in half. If the class is caring for them collectively, a shoebox works well. Make sure the silkworms are placed on top of their food to prevent suffocation.
2. Observational Studies: - Have students record each instar stage and the duration of each, along with any other observations they make. This can include noting changes in size, behaviour, and eating habits.
3. Cocooning Stage: - Once the silkworms cocoon, relocate them to a larger shoebox and leave it in the classroom. Watching the silkworms hatch into silk-moths will be an exciting moment for the students, and seeing their proud faces as they witness the fruits of their labour is a rewarding experience for any teacher.
