These are not genetically altered in any way. The artificial diet uses a special dye to change the colour of the silkworm. It should only be fed to silkworms from the 2nd day of the 5th and final instar. If your silkworms are fed on leaves, you may smear the chow on the leaves for them to consume. The silkworm’s cocoon colour will also be the same colour as the food it is fed!
These silkworms are not recommended as insect feeders and colour intensity does vary depending on amount and frequency of feedings.
Please follow the chow instructions as attached to your order confirmation email and adjust the quantity to 50g of chow rather than 200g.
*From a scientific perspective, silkworms have a relatively simple central nervous system rather than a brain with complex emotions, so changes in their environment, like colour, do not affect them mentally. If they were experiencing any physical or psychological stress, we would expect to see higher mortality rates, but that’s not the case. The dye in the food is safe and doesn’t harm them in any way.
